What are compact scales?

A compact scale (also known as a compact balance) is a portable weighing device designed for simple weighing tasks, usually of small items or samples. Compact balances are small in size, with a durable, rugged design. These balances are used for many applications such as classrooms and school or university labs for educational purposes, onsite and fieldwork tasks, food service for portion control or small-scale production, and industrial and warehouse environments where very small items need to be weighed in limited quantities.

The main differences to consider are that compact balances are less accurate and precise than professional analytical and precision balance models, as they usually have a readability of no finer than 0.01g. In contrast, precision balances usually provide readings to the nearest 0.001g, and analytical balances of at least 0.0001g. Most compact balances are also battery-operated, using AA or rechargeable batteries, making it easier when moving around, while some have AC adapters.

Compact scales and compact balances are scales and balances with a small footprint. This makes them highly desirable for any business which operates within a restricted space. Quite often these scales and balances come with battery operation capabilities and have been designed for portability.

Are compact balances accurate enough for laboratory use?

Compact balances are accurate enough for basic lab tasks and in classroom lab settings. However, they are not as detailed as other scientific instrumentation models suited to laboratory use, such as precision and analytical balances, which provide high accuracy and better repeatability.

Are compact balances legal for trade use?

A compact balance can be legal for trade if they have an M sticker to indicate that the particular model is trade approved. If your compact balance model does not have the M sticker, then it won't be legal for trade.

Compact scales can be found across a range of different industries such as food production, education, jewellery, animal care and industrial/commercial.
