What is a crane scale?
Crane scales - or hanging scales - are weighing scales used for suspended weighing of large, heavy or awkwardly-shaped items. Additionally, crane scales may be used to ensure a crane is not overloaded, by providing the weight of the goods being lifted.

Crane scales and hanging scales are typically used in industrial environments and allow you to save on floor space when weighing. For example, a high capacity platform scale will take up valuable room, but a crane scale is suspended from the roof or a gantry, so can be easily kept out of the way when not in use.

What are typical uses of crane scales?
Crane scales are often found in tough, industrial environments such as shipyards, factories and warehouses for shipping, engineering and manufacturing related tasks. They have durable, protective casing and large steel-plated shackle attachments that protect the weighing unit from accidental damage during weighing. They

Crane scales can be used for a variety of large-scale industrial applications including weighing commercial fishing nets, weighing oversized containers and crates, suspended weighing of steel alloy bars and other materials in construction, or during off-loading of cargo from ships.

Note: As with all industrial weighing applications, the user is responsible for ensuring the scale is operated safely throughout weighing operations. It is important that users fully comply with Safe Working Load (SWL) criteria and should only use these scales for carrying out suspended weighing operations under the stated weight limit. Neither Inscale nor the manufacturer can be responsible for accidents or incidents caused as a result of the improper use of these scales.

How does a crane scale work?

Crane scales are designed with a hook at either side to allow for a simple weighing practice. When a load is attached to your device, the force exuded on the load cell is measured and displayed on the digital readout. This lifting process can make for more efficient transport operations as goods can be weighed and conveyed via crane at the same time.

How accurate are crane scales?

The accuracy of a crane scale is dependent on the make and model, although most devices will remain accurate despite having a high capacity. Some crane scales, such as the Kern HCB Hanging Scale, posses a readability of 0.01kg even with a maximum capacity of 20kg. Generally, a crane scale will be accurate from around 0.1 to 0.2 percent of the maximum capacity.
