Why is it so important to weigh pets and animals regularly?

An animal's weight is a significant indicator of their overall health and wellbeing. While fluctuations in weight are normal, sudden drops or rises in weight over the course of a short amount of time may indicate a health issue that should be investigated thoroughly by a veterinarian. Potential causes could be as simple as not enough or too much food to match their exercise levels, but it's important to get checked out in case they're suffering from an illness or parasite.

Weighing pets and animals at least once a year or every few months helps develop a baseline average weight that you can use for comparison. In general, if you notice that an animal has lost or gained 10% or more of their bodyweight, it's time for concern. The faster your response, the better chance the animal has of effective treatment.

The weight of an animal also impacts how much medicine they should be prescribed. A cow and a chihuahua would most certainly get different dosages. The same dosage that would help a cow could seriously harm a chihuahua, and a cow wouldn't even feel an impact from the dosage you'd give the dog. The goal is to help animals as best as possible, and keeping track of their weight with a veterinary scale will make this task easier.

Of course, we're not veterinarians ourselves. If you have any concerns about an animal in your care, please contact a professional for the most accurate and up-to-date advice.

What features should I look for when buying a scale to weigh animals?

Firstly, the weighing scale should be easy to clean. If you’re weighing messy pets and animals or simply need to wash the scale quickly and efficiently, an IP rating indicates whether or not the scale can be washed down. Inscale sells IP68 rated stainless steel scales that can be hosed down without any risk of water entering the scale or causing damage.

Secondly, shock or overload protection is also a good idea if you want to weigh multiple animals such as livestock, cattle and sheep all at once as this may exceed the capacity of the scale.

Lastly, A hold feature allows you make sure the animal is taken care of before you record the weight, and portability allows you to use the animal scale in different settings without having to move the animal. Of course, dynamic weighing is a must.

What is dynamic animal weighing?

Dynamic animal weighing works out an average weight based on the force exerted by the animal over a defined period of time. Most digital weighing balances will hold the value after the calculations are complete. Not restricted to animals, scales with dynamic weighing applications also work for liquids. This function can be extremely helpful when dealing with wiggly or nervous animals, as they don't need to stay perfectly still to get an accurate result. Allowing them reasonable freedom of movement while weighing may even help lessen their veterinary anxiety so they'll be better next time.

Tips for Weighing Animals and Pets

Not all animals or pets will be thrilled with the idea of being placed on a veterinary scale and standing still to get a weight reading (if your scale doesn't offer animal weighing). We recommend keeping pets at ease by offering treats or a snack to eat while they're being weighed. Putting a blanket or bed down may also help them relax - just make sure to Tare it out of the results. For smaller pets, it may be easier to place them in a container or box that's been tared out, so they remain contained and can't run around.
